Q. How long have you been practicing the Martial Arts?
A. 24 years
Q. How has your karate changed over the years?
A. I would like to think that it has improved but that would be for Master Capela to judge! Actually, for me the practice of the art has truly become a journey of self discovery instead of a means to impress others or pass the time. It's amazing what you can learn about yourself when you stop being concerned about external impressions.
Q. Who have you studied under?
A. I started under Mr. Patrick Devore a student of Master Capela's. I trained with him for about 6 months before he left for military service. Mr. Devore introduced me to Master Capela in 1981 and he has been my karate instructor since then.
I also train in Nito Tenshin Ryu Kenjutsu under Master John Hamilton.
Q. What are your personal beliefs about training?
A. To quote Winston Churchhill 'Never never never never give up' Train hard, never give up, you will improve.
Q. What do you feel is the proper ratio of kata to kumite in training?
A. Not to be flippant but you should do kata how you kumite and people should see kata in your kumite so the ratio is not all that important. It is the attitude with which you do them that counts.
Q. Do you have any funny or intersting karate stories
you would like to share?
A. Many! But, most would not be proper to speak of here!
Q. How do you feel about full contact kick boxing and
the mixed martial arts?
A. They are fine for those that enjoy them, but understand that the art changes when it becomes a sport. To truly be an art there can be no barriers. In a sport there must be. As long as the participants enjoy these sports within their constraints this is fine.
Q. Could you tell us a little about your school?
A. We are a small school in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. I think the name says what we are trying to promote. Shoriki = 'Righteous Power'.
Q. Do you have any programs or events that you would
Like to promote or talk about?
A. I think that there is something going on in Georgia....
We are also trying to plan a weekend trip to a Buddhist Monastery in New York. The monks there are masters of Tai Chi and Chi Gung. If anyone is interested let me know.
Q. Is there any one you would like to thank or send amessage to?
A. Thanks to everyone that has trained with me or taken the time to share their expertise with me.To Hanshi Capela goes the most thanks.
Q. Do you have any advise for the karate students who
will read this?
A. When your training seems the toughest and you feel you are doingyour worst....that's when you are learning the most.
Q. Thank you for your time.
A. You are welcome.
